Garbo (Real)

Garbo (Real),A cloth-producing quarter of Florence. In chapter XXX this is mentioned as the Via del Garbo where Baldassarre Calvo buys a book. Guido Biagi, in his edition of Romola points out that the Garbo was not properly a quarter, but merely a certain length of street, corresponding to that portion of the present Via della Condotta between the Via Calzaiuoli and the Piazzetta delle Farine. The woollen cloth manufactured in the Via del Garbo was a finer quality than that from San Martino, the other cloth-producing section. (See Romola, Biagi ed. vol. 1, p. 11.)
