Kalonymos, Joseph

A faithful friend of Daniel Deronda's grandfather, from whom Daniel eventually obtains his grandfather's papers. As a substantial merchant with business in distant parts of the earth he is a type of the "wandering Jew". At Frankfort he sees Daniel Deronda in the Synagogue, ascertains his name, and suspects that he is the grandson of his old friend, Charisi. He then goes to Daniel's mother, who had told him that her son had died years before, accuses her of falsehood to her father, and is the means of her sending for Daniel and revealing his parentage and race to him.
