Description

The ill-favoured pastry-cook who, under the name of Edward Freely, runs a successful confectioner's business at Grimworth until he is brought to grief by Brother Jacob, his idiot brother. Not satisfied with his modest prospects at home he steals his mother's small hoard of twenty guineas, goes to the West Indies, and later returns to England with an alias and a picturesque background of imaginary adventures and fictitious rich relatives. As Edward Freely he sets up in business as a confectioner at Grimworth, corrupts the good housewives of the town who had previously made their own pastry and is on the point of crowning his success by marrying pretty Penelope Palfrey, the daughter of the richest farmer in Grimworth, when hid idiot brother Jacob finds him, and his real name and career are revealed.
