Introduction, The Personal Edition of George Eliot's Works: Poems, Essays, and Leaves from a Note Book

These entries seem to show that, on the whole, the writing of The Spanish Gipsy went forward with less despondency and depression that most of her novels, although we find symptoms a little later of her wonted fits of despair.
