Juan

Poet and minstrel; a friend both to Duke Silva and to the Spanish Gypsy, Fedalma, with whom he is unselfishly in love. "So Juan was a troubadour revived / Freshening life's dusty road with babbling rills / Of wit and song, living mid harnessed men / With limbs ungalled by armour." Juan forms a connecting link in several parts of the plot. His light talk with the Gypsy prisoner, Zarca, enables the Gypsy to recognize Fedalma as his lost daughter. When Fedalma throws in her lot with her father and the Gypsies escape from Bedmar, Juan goes with them to the Gypsy camp at Guadix, and is there when Duke Silva, for love of Fedalma, joins the Gypsies. When Fedalma after her father's death is embarking for Africa it is Juan who sees the pilgrim Silva on the strand, and urges Fedalma to a last interview with the lover from whom she is separated for ever.
