Burchiello (Hist.)

Title

Burchiello (Hist.)

Description

A barber, Nello's great predecessor, often mentioned by him, whose shop was on the Calimara. "Now a barber can be dispassionate; the only thing he necessarily stands by is the razor, always providing he is not an author. That was the flaw in my great predecessor Burchiello: he was a poet, and had consequently a prejudice about his own poetry." Domenico di Giovanni, called Il Burchiello, poet and barber in Florence about 1404 and died at Rome 1448. His sonnets (first edition Bologna, 1474) were very popular, and were frequently reprinted.
