Dominicans, or, Frati Predicatori (Hist.)

The monastic order to which Savonarola belongs. Savonarola is a Dominican, as also Fra Domenico who takes up the Fraciscan challenge to the Trial by Fire, and Fra Salvestro who is Romola's confessor. It was the Dominicans that Romola's brother Bernardino de' Bardi joined when he left home, he goes to their monastery at Fiesole when he is ill, and dies at the Dominican convent of San Marco in Florence, of which Savonarola is Prior. The Dominicans, or Order of Preachers (Ordo Predicatorum) founded by St. Dominic in 1215.
