Medici, Lorenzo de', called Il Magnifico, or, The Magnificent (Hist.)

He does not figure as a character in Romola, but the news of his death is discussed in the Mercato Vecchio in the opening chapters, and he is frequently mentioned. Lorenzo de' Medici (1448-92), virtual ruler of Florence, patron of arts and letters and himself a writer.
