Piagnoni (Hist.)

Description

The name given to the adheretns or party of Savonarola; the democratic party. The name Piagnoni, which means snivellers or funeral mourners (i.e. paid mourners), was given to the followers of Savonarola because they constantly denounced the sins of the city and advocated a sober, restrained life. In the politics of the period, the Piagnoni, or party of the people, were opposed both to the Mediceans and to the Arrabbiati, or aristocratic party.
