Praise of George Eliot as a distinguished writer on the same level as Shakespeare and then goes to critique George Eliot's Life, which the author thought was too watered down. John Cross extracted many of the pieces to follow the wishes of George Eliot, who disliked the style of literary biography; she felt that these biographies had no right to go through every little piece of writing of an author which may or may not have been meant for the public and distribute to the masses for gossiping.
