For more than 125 individuals connected to George Eliot, we have written brief summaries of their relationship and provide their portraits, if available. These brief summaries primarily rely on The Oxford Reader's Companion to George Eliot (2001) edited by John Rignall, where researchers will find much more detailed information.
The relationship summaries were written and edited over several years by Beverley Park Rilett with several research assistants, including Sydney Baty, Susannah Boyer, Megan Ekstrom, Lindsay Roberts, Maxwell Robeson, Brandon Unverferth, and Hollie Tucker. They represent a truly collaborative effort; the summaries have been edited and revised so frequently that no single author can be identified.
The George Eliot Archive team especially appreciates the editorial assistance in 2020 of Dr. John Rignall and Dr. Kathleen McCormack for suggestions and corrections. We will continue to add more of Eliot's associates in future iterations. Your feedback (including suggested corrections) is always welcome at firstname.lastname@example.org.
