West Hallam Hall, Derbyshire

The character Adam Bede is based on Robert Evans, George Eliot’s father. The story grew from Robert Evans’ memories of his childhood in Derbyshire, which is Stonybridge in Adam Bede. This image shows West Hallam Hall, seat of the Newdigates, in Derbyshire.
