- Book II. of Middlemarch (Blackwood and Sons) comes to remind us of our interest in a series of persons to whom we were introduced some two months ago. That look back is instructive. How is it that we seem to recall these people, not so much as figures in some play or scene invented by an artist, as in the midst of ordinary life, and living somewhere in a real country district? The obvious reply to this question is that George Eliot, above any novelist with whom we are acquainted, has succeeded in describing the conditions and surroundings of ordinary life without the distortion produced by looking through the spectacles of the usual writer of fiction.
