"It is Peter Featherstone’s death that is being waited for by some of the persons who are most prominent in this third part of George Eliot’s novel, and the half-volume ends with a rather sensational picture of Mary Garth letting in the early morning light on the old man’s bed, to show him clutching with one hand the mass of gold and notes which he had tried to bribe her to destroy one of his two wills, and grasping in the other the keys that would have given her access to the document."
