It notes that “in by far the most important of the ‘three love-problems’ that are here set forth, though not yet solved, Dorothea is the central figure: whereat all readers of Middlemarch will rejoice.” The reviewer observes that the heroine was somewhat neglected in the previous book, but this is now “amply atoned for by the care and completeness with which George Eliot devotes herself to the further portrayal of a character which promises to be the most wonderful of all her creations.”
