The Reader

Title

The Reader

Description

  • An explanation and criticism of John Cross's work "George Eliot's Life." The book is composed of journal entries and letters intended to give the reader a greater grasp on George Eliot as a person as well as explanations written by Mr. Cross between the entries if he felt they were necessary. The author of the aritcle feels that this format of the book creates a lack of "deep personal tone" and "symmetry." The omissions made by Mr. Cross, the author worries, only permitted an idealized version of George Eliot to show.
