George Henry Lewes to Mark Pattison, 27 December 1875. “Last night Mrs. Lewes read aloud your remarkable paper on Philosophy at Oxford and I must scribble you a line to say how delighted and gratified we were with it. Not only is it a valuable contribution to the history of our time but will help to form sound ideas on that most important of all reforms -- reform of the theory of Education. There are other splendid passages -- passages such as Burke would have delighted in. Notably that one beginning "there was no light on the arena" etc. and the description of the prizeman with his "moral palor." This latter portion of the essay was particularly pleasing to Mrs. Lewes because confirming something she has written in her new book; and we were both not a little gratified at the telling reference to ‘Problems.’” GEL 6: 202
