All the time we were away did nothing but rub up my Spanish and read Don Quijote. Polly also began Spanish and as[k]ed to read pages aloud to me. I read Tennyson Idylls to her occasionally. On our way back stopped at Peterborough for night and half the day. The Cathedral not comparable to that of York, but the facade with its three arches one of the most exquisite we have seen. -- Ben in a state of irrepressible rapture on our arrival!" Diary 1880 214^^The attached file is the 1881 edition translated by Alexander James Duffield; it is not the version of Don Quixote Eliot read in 1877, but is the version she read at the end of 1880, and is the only edition of the two we can provide with accuracy. It is the earliest edition of Duffield's translation that we could find, even though it is noted to be published after Eliot's death.
