"Yesterday afternoon we returned from a three weeks outing which was rendered necessary by my debility and dyspepsia, and by Polly's general malaise. . . . All the time we were away did nothing but rub up my Spanish and read Don Quijote. Polly also began Spanish and as[k]ed to read pages aloud to me. I read Tennyson Idylls to her occasionally. On our way back stopped at Peterborough for night and half the day. The Cathedral not comparable to that of York, but the facade with its three arches one of the most exquisite we have seen. -- Ben in a state of irrepressible rapture on our arrival!"
