1871-04-29: George Henry Lewes to Robert Lytton, London, 29 April 1871. "I am pleased to hear of Viller's pleasure in the Goethe and shall be glad to hear from him. Remember us to Liszt when you see him. We have had Tourguéneff here lately and seen much of him. He was an old fellow student of mine in Berlin in 1838 and we had not met since! He's a superb creature and a real genius. Do you know his Récits d'un chasseur? if not, do. -- Every Saturday I go to Mad. Viardot's -- she has charming musical soirées, and as Polly declines to go out, Viardot kindly proposed to come to her some afternoon and sing as long as she liked. She did so, and a splendid exhibition it was! One of your appreciators and real well-wishers, Lady Castletown, pointed out to me what a group of genius and of what variety of genius there was standing in a small circle on that occasion -- Tourguéneff, Viardot, Browning, Trollope, Burne-Jones, and Polly." 1875-10-09: "[George Eliot] and [George Henry Lewes] returned to the Priory 23 September 1875. Finding the drawing room still unpapered and the whole house smelling of paint, they set out the next morning for Shrewsbury. After three days there they went on for brief stays at Aberystwith, Barmouth, Dolgelley, Carnarvon, Llanberis, and Chester, reaching home 9 October to find "the Priory still in the hands of the paper hangers!" During their trip [Eliot] read aloud Jane Austen's Emma, Dickens's Uncommercial Traveller, Turgenev's Nouvelles Moscovites and Récits d'un chasseur, and Sterne's Sentimental Journey." GEL 6: 171f
