George Eliot to Mrs. Charles Bray, 11 September 1852. “I should think Mr. Bray and Mr. C. have done corresponding now. I have not seen any letters between them lately. It was a vexation to me that Mr. Bray should have applied to Mr. Flower. I felt sure the result would be a negative. But God bless him for that and all his other good deeds. You may as well expect news from an old spider or bat as from me. I can only tell you what I think of the Blithedale Romance, of Uncle Tom's Cabin, and the American Fishery Dispute -- all which I am very sure you don't want to know -- any more than Mr. Bray, who says he hates ‘intellectual gossip.’ (I know he doesn't hate unintellectual gossip).” GEL 2: 55-6
