Evidence
1877-[06-10]-[?]: "Their reading at Witley included a few old favourites--The Heart of Midlothian, The Legend of Montrose, Sir Charles Grandison, and Les Trois Mousquetaires. Lewes's Diary also mentions a number of recent novels--Trollope's The American Senator, Reade's A Woman Hater, Turgenev's Les Terres vierges, Zola's L'Assommoir, and The Pilot and His Wife by the Norwegian novelist Jonas Lie--Cobbett's works, Tennyson's dramas and The Idylls of the King, Daudet, Sainte-Beuve, and Mme D'Agoult's Memoires (probably suggested by the Wagners' visit). There is one bare reference to Edith Simcox's Natural Law. She was not invited to the Heights; no letter acknowledged the dedication." Gordon S. Haight, George Eliot: A Biography. Oxford University Press 1968. p. 505.
1877-07-09: George Henry Lewes to John Blackwood, 9 July 1877. “We continue exploring the beauties of this country and enjoy our solitude, and our books. By the way tell Lockhart that his opening number kept me in one gurgle of delight -- so very different from the constant grating of "A Woman Hater"! Jonas Lie also was pleasant. Now we are reading Mad. D'Agoult's Mémoires -- not for her sake but for the sake of her daughter Mad. Wagner.” GEL 6: 391
