George Eliot to John Blackwood, 20 February 1874. “You did send me a copy of Lord Lytton's Fables -- many thanks for doing so. Mr. Lewes had seen several of them in manuscript, and thought well of their merits. I am reading them gradually. They are full of graceful fancies and charming verse. So far as cleverness goes, it seems to me he can do almost anything, and the leanings of his mind are towards the best things. The want I feel is of more definiteness and more weight. The two stanzas to his wife placed before ‘Far’ and ‘Near’ are perfect.” GEL 6: 23
