Evidence

"Their reading at Witley included a few old favourites--The Heart of Midlothian, The Legend of Montrose, Sir Charles Grandison, and Les Trois Mousquetaires. Lewes's Diary also mentions a number of recent novels--Trollope's The American Senator, Reade's A Woman Hater, Turgenev's Les Terres vierges, Zola's L'Assommoir, and The Pilot and His Wife by the Norwegian novelist Jonas Lie--Cobbett's works, Tennyson's dramas and The Idylls of the King, Daudet, Sainte-Beuve, and Mme D'Agoult's Memoires (probably suggested by the Wagners' visit). There is one bare reference to Edith Simcox's Natural Law. She was not invited to the Heights; no letter acknowledged the dedication." Gordon S. Haight, George Eliot: A Biography. Oxford University Press 1968. p. 505.
