George Eliot to George Lille Craik, 11 December 1862. “A wretched headache, which prevented me from working this morning, was lightened for me by "So-Fat and Mew-Mew." It seems to me a little chef-d'oeuvre -- the humourous simplicity is so thoroughly sustained from beginning to end. But I am good-for-nothing as a critic, and only know what I like, not what I ought to like. That play of fancy about the life of animals has always been a delight to me, and I care for it just as much now I am old, as I did when I read by fire light on my little stool. Some of "The Giant" too is good, but "So-Fat and Mew-Mew" is the gem, and it has very properly happened that the artist has given it the prettiest initial letter.” GEL 4: 69
