My dear Lewes.
This is a begging letter, and I hate begging. It is intended for you and your wife alike. Shirley Brooks, who had been engaged for 35 years in literature, has died leaving a life insurance for £4000 with a wife and two sons, and not a penny else. His friends want to save the assurance for permanent income and if possible to add something, -- also to raise a sum for immediate wants. I am acting as Treasurer. Dont be angry, and if you disapprove merely say so 238.
