Waltham House, | Waltham Cross.
August 13. 1869.
My dear Lewes.
Your news about your boy is very bad. I can only tell you how strongly I feel for you.
I do admire Horne 884 as a poet, -- that is I think highly of his Orion; -- but I do not know of what nature is his prose, or how the man who wrote Orion in 1839 (or thereabouts) would write now in 1869. Nor am I specially wedded to serial articles (to use an abominable word). Readers of magazines skip them when on dry subjects. Seebohm 885 did answer with you, -- but then they were very good. Bell's did not. 886 But they were very bad. If he has ought written and will send it to me I will read it; -- but I will not pledge myself.
And now I have a bit of news for you of the domestic kind which will surprise you. My eldest boy Harry has gone into partnership with Chapman. I pay 'a310000 -- (of course this is private) -- and he has a third of the business. I have had an immense deal of trouble in arranging it, and will tell you details when we meet. It is a fine business which has been awfully ill used by want of sufficient work and sufficient capital.
Do not let me intrude on you; -- but if you are disengaged and Thornie is not too ill, I will come up to you next week some evening. My wife is away, -- in Paris, -- or rather goes tonight. I go with her, but return. Address Athenaeum Club.
Yours always affectionately
A. T.
