My dear Mr. Combe,
Dr. Brabant was to give Chapman, towards the Westminster, whatever you gave. Now he can well afford to give hundreds if he likes and he has just got off 300 'a3 which he was to have given towards another literary undertaking, but which will not now be required. Now what I am going to say shall be strictly between ourselves and Miss Evans, to whom I have mentioned it. Have you any objection to receive the subscription of your friends towards enlarging your contribution? If I subscribe it will be because you do, and because our views are to be represented there. &unknown;Now&unknown; Will you allow me therefore to send my 20 'a3 to you and you can then write to Chapman and say, that you will, or that you think it right, or that circumstances have enabled you, to give two twenty pounds? I know Dr. Brabant very well, and I assure you that I think it all fair -- he is a regular old screw, with more money than he knows what to do with.
