My dear Mr. Combe,
I still think my view of Miss Evans' case the correct one. I saw something of both parties before they left and heard the matter a good deal discussed by them. Dr. Brabant also met them and introduced Marian to Dr. Strauss and seemed to take the same view of the matter as I do. I also heard the report in Town of Miss Martineau's letter and mentioned it to Mr. Chapman, who pronounced it, I forget on what ground, impossible. 231 I have written to Miss Evans and hope for an immediate reply, and therefore it will be unnecessary to write to Miss Martineau -- indeed with my belief in the matter, I would rather not mix myself in with the scandal part till I have better evidence than the good-natured gossip afloat. You shall hear immediately I can tell you anything.
May I ask you, if you approved of Dr. Hodgson taking his money in full at the expense of the other creditors or rather of another creditor, because I believe that he reports every where that you did? My wife and Miss Hennell are sadly troubled about all this and wish me to say that Miss E's going had not their sanction, because they knew nothing at all about it. I trust you and Mrs. Combe are now quite recovered. We returned from Niton, I. of Wight, on Saturday last. Ever, my dear Sir,
