Charles Lee Lewes to E. F. S. Pigott, London, 22 December 1878
MS: Mr. Gordon N. Ray.
The Priory | 22 December 1878.
My dear Pigott
I am sorry that I cannot give you altogether a favourable report of my Mother. She seems as time goes on to find it more difficult rather than less difficult to bear her sorrow. Still I think her frame and heart are so strong that she will weather it. She is not worse in health but perhaps a shade better. It is only mentally that she is worse -- seeming to realise more intensely the terrible fact. But in her work she to a great extent rights herself and there are many hours each day that she can work.
I have got three or four boxes of my Father's cigarettes for you, when I can find time to put them up. He had meant to send them to you in addition to the cigars but as they are the only things you can now smoke they will come to you alone.
Yours ever
C. L. Lewes.
