Dear Mr. Lewes
Thank you for your note. It is a sad comfort that both have been spared longer pain, and we can only pray that some of the strength she has given to others may be with her now. But there was never grief like hers. One can think of no other loss beside that, but yours too -- and ours -- he was all generous loving kindness -- God comfort her!
I saw the doctors when they left the house on Saturday, and wrote a line to Mrs. Stuart to prepare her for the worst.
It is a mercy that she has something to live for in doing what he wished. I know all other love must be unbearable because it is not his, and she will know it is not for want of love I do not write to her: it must be best to leave her alone with the blessed memory of his perfect goodness.
