Sunday 19 January 1879
Yesterday Eleanor Cross came here. She is a good girl, and I was fed by her mention of her last visit to the Heights with Johnny; they went over for a call one day in October 478 when they were able to leave their mother for a few hours, and were made to stay to luncheon and dinner. In the afternoon they went a long lovely drive; they had never had a happier day and she quoted from Dante (a passage she asked me to find) that they would never see the Dawn of such a day again. "The dear little man" as she calls him, laid himself out for their amusement, sang to them in the evening, was if possible more actively kind than usual. -- When he was dying he told them to give his cigars to Willy Cross -- who is a great smoker.
