Sunday 20 January 1878
And today though it is Sunday (I have not been since November 25) I will take "The Child's Own Book" with me and just see her and make wild attempts to talk to somebody the few minutes I stay -- then come back and go on if I can with my scribbling.
Tuesday 22 January 1878
There were few visitors, so if I had not been stupidly modest I might have had "good times." Lewes was affectionate. I took her the book and talked mostly -- for 20 minutes to him and W. Cross. He said Herbert Spencer was preparing autobiographical materials 411 -- it will be entertainingly wooden and arrogant.
