September 9. On Monday I heard from her, in prompt reply to my last which had only just reached her. She speaks of love and tenderness that do not prevent her feeling sometimes as if she had woke in an unremembered state of existence and almost wished she were dead. One felt all the difficulty; she will miss the active intellectual companionship. The "family" is all very dear and good, but of old she did not depend on them alone. Then before the marriage between her and Johnny I think the sympathy must have been complete: now he cannot in any way lighten her feeling of a divided duty; she must remember what is lost, and yet for his sake it would be well if she could sometimes forget.
