The Grange, Northend. dear Mrs. Lewes
It ought to be the easiest thing in the world for me to say how grateful I am for your letter, but I feel as if I couldn't say it strongly enough or make you quite believe how important your praise is to me. -- Indeed you have written so sweetly and comfortingly to me that you have made me seriously happy, and given me more courage than I have felt for many a day. You know I am not so silly as to take all this praise and hug myself contentedly (which I feel inclined to -- nay even to strut a while) but this understanding sympathy of yours does go to my heart and encourage it mightily. please believe me I hold this a very precious letter that will help me to feel less dismayed at my own fogginess and bewilderment (which is plentiful
always) since you can see any light at all in me. It was a kind thought to send me such a letter.
