My dear Mr. Bancroft:
Mr. Ripley 114 has assigned to me, among my other work, the preparation of Mrs. Lewes' (George Eliot's) biography for the new edition of the cyclopaedia; and at a conversation yesterday, in which I spoke of your acquaintance with Mr. and Mrs. Lewes, he suggested that I should take the liberty of asking information from you. -- The books are almost entirely wanting in even the most important facts regarding Mrs.
Lewes; and yet we are especially anxious to devote to her an article so complete as to pay proper tribute to her. Can we rely upon your kindness to let us have from you such details as you may have in mind? -- Even the date of her birth it is impossible to give, even approximately; and all information is wanting as to her early residence. In short we can find out accurately little besides the dates of her works. -- We are very near to the article in our printing, too; but there is still time for this note to reach England and receive an answer, if we may ask you to take this trouble. It will be one of many kindnesses you have done the cyclopaedia. . . .
Pray convey to Mrs. Bancroft most cordial messages from my mother and myself, and believe me
