My dear Mrs. Lewes,
I send back the proof of the trial. I see nothing or almost nothing which needs alteration. There is no positive statement as to the charge and it all reads naturally as a trial for the attack on the Constable. I see no difficulty either as to the witnesses -- witnesses to character naturally come last but at the judge's suggestion a witness might very well be brought forward afterwards to speak a fact. So far as I have seen it it works right perfectly and I feel sure you may be satisfied there is nothing illegal.
I am so very sorry to hear that you are still unwell and suffering so much just at this time when everything is needed for the end, and in my attempt to be of use I fear I have troubled you in the most awkward and unreasonable ways. But I hope it is but for a few days longer only.
