My dear Mrs. Lewes
I was very glad to know that you had found your brooch, and to get your note telling me so. I feel a sort of instinctive conviction that when people tell you how much good you have done them you feel, not complacency but rather compassion for mankind, dwelling as they do in such forlorn darkness that what no doubt seems to you the feeble and smoky glow of your own presence and character should nevertheless be to so many of them the masterlight of all their day.
I shall not therefore enlarge on the effect of your visit to Cambridge on more than one man whom you met there: you seem to bring to everyone what he needs, to me your presence, like your writings, gives most of all the sense of example and companionship in the higher and unknown struggles of the soul, and will cause them to be something less lonely and bitter in the victories of Honour.
As for Mr. Lewes, he has friends, I don't doubt, in every University in Europe, but nowhere, I venture to say, more sincere and more anxious to see him again than in the ancient but only-partially-effete foundation of King Edward III. 197
