During the last three weeks George has been very poorly, but now he is better. I have been reading Fawcett's Economic Condition of the Working Classes, 382 Mill's Liberty, looking into Strauss's Second Life of Jesus, 383 and reading Neale's History of the Puritans of which I have reached the fourth volume. Yesterday the news came of Mrs. Gaskell's death. 384 She died suddenly while reading aloud to her daughters.

Writing Mr. Lyon's story, which I have determined to insert as a narrative. 385 Reading the Bible.
Sara Hennell lunched and dined with us. At the end of Chapter VII.
Finished Neale's History of the Puritans: began Hallam's Middle Ages.
