October 19. 1869.
This evening at half past six our dear Thornie died. He went quite peacefully. For three days he was not more than fitfully and imperfectly conscious of the things around him.
He went to Natal on the 17th of October, 1863, and came back to us ill on the 8th of May, 1869. Through the six months of his illness, his frank impulsive mind disclosed no trace of evil feeling. He was a sweet-natured boy -- still a boy though he had lived for 25 years and a half. On the 9th of August he had an attack of paraplegia, and although he partially recovered from it, it made a marked change in him. After that he lost a great deal of his vivacity. But he suffered less pain. This death seems to me the beginning of our own.
