No is a very ugly word, and I especially dislike to say it to any one who has been so kind to me as you have always been. I have no special knowledge of Freytag and have not read "Son and [Soll und] Haben." 1003 I assure you nothing but utter inability has kept me from writing for the "Leader." . . . Do not think me an ordinary conceited woman who is flattering herself that her work is of importance to the world. It is nothing but the sense that my work is important as a matter of every day advantage, that gives me courage to write at all . . . George has had a sore throat . . . He is up to the ears in proof and manuscript. . . .
