MS: Mr. Gordon N. Ray. Endorsed: George Eliot.
The Priory, | 21. North Bank, | Regents Park.
May 19. 73.
So far as I am able to imagine what are the duties attached to the Secretaryship of the Royal Academy, it seems to me that few men can be better fitted for the post than Mr. Pigott; and I say this on the warrant of an observation which has extended through twenty years.
Such an office should surely be filled by one who adds to a power of writing with distinction and taste, a large experience of the world and of work demanding regular application, delicate generosity of feeling, and a fine sense of what belongs specifically to the intercourse of gentlemen.
These are qualifications which I have had continual opportunities of noting in Mr. Pigott. 191
