The quotation from Sainte-Beuve which I mentioned to you 759 is on page 11 of his [Cahiers]: "La critique pour moi (comme pour M. Joubert) c'est le plaisir de conna'eetre les esprits, non de les r'e9genter."
As to the work in which you have done me the honour to ask for my co-operation, 760 I feel obliged to decline your proposal, though your kindness has given me many reasons for wishing to meet your views. I like to think that you will not be at a loss to find a writer who will treat that supreme subject in literature at once reverently and with independence.
