My dear Sir,
We came home from a long residence in the country the other day, though I have always dated my letters from this house, to save trouble about addresses.
A troublesome headache, still lingering, has hindered me from thanking you for your interesting letter of the 31st -- all the more interesting to me because you had avoided reviews and endeavoured to come to the book 357 with a fresh mind. Do you remember Goethe's wise words about reading Spinoza? -- "I always preferred knowing what an author himself said, to knowing what others thought he ought to have said." 358
