Dear Bessie
I have been a wretched invalid for more than a month with a, to me, quite new ailment -- namely, a bad cough, which, like the East wind, obstinately refuses to go. I have been here in country air and quiet for the last ten days, but these medicines seem as ineffectual as Mr. Dunn's doses. I have made up my mind to be in London again on the 23d, cough or no cough; so we shall soon see each other again. A great pleasure that will be to me, dear pet. You must first give me three hugs and a dozen kisses, and then tell me the story of all you have done in those long weeks that you have been away.
