Dear Bessie
I am ashamed that a week ago I sent you a letter addressed simply to Wimpole Street without any number. The cause of that harumscarum proceeding was, that your note had got amongst some papers so that I could not find it to refer to the address there given, and I did not want to defer writing to thank you. I know the number now, and have put it safely down in my address book.
If you received my first letter, there is no need for you to take any notice of this. It is simply an apology which I am not easy without making.
