I am very much obliged to you for the books which arrived yesterday. Your kindness has relieved me from a difficulty.
If in the next or the subsequent number of Frazer you should see an article called "Three Months in Weimar" 591 perhaps it will interest you to know a little about what we saw there. The article is merely a sketch which I wrote at the wrong end of my journal 592 and is worth little. But when I read it to Mr. Lewes he was so pleased with it that he would have me offer it to Frazer, and as this was a mode of turning it into guineas I could have no objection. I believe it is to be divided into two articles, however, so that you will only see the first half in the next number. Don't say anything about it, for it, for to people who do not enjoy description of scenery it will seem very tame and stupid, and I really think a taste for descriptive writing is the rarest of all tastes among ordinary people.
I find you must not pur Richmond on your letters but simply Surrey, as Richmond is not our post, but Mortlake. As to the rest of the address, I leave it to your judgment. Thank Cara for her care in the restitution of old towels. Mr. Lewes is much better and works "like anything" or rather like very few things. I hope the publication of
"Goethe's Life" will soon be settled. When it is, I will tell you, for I am sure you will rejoice in our joy.
Best love to Cara and Sara. I was very pleased to hear that you had Thackeray as a visitor, 593 for I know how interested you would all be in seeing and construing the man. He has sent Mr. Lewes a pretty little letter containing his reminiscences of Goethe and Weimar, to be inserted in the "Life." 594
