Clarence Row | East Sheen | September 13. 55.
Dear Friend
At length I return the volumes of Scott which you kindly took the trouble to send me. 625 Reasons occurred for my not writing the projected article, but the loan effected one beneficent object, for when Mr. Lewes was too ill to listen to anything else I read him Old Mortality and the Fair Maid of Perth. I am very sorry that I am unable to pay the carriage of the parcel at the Mortlake station, and no practicable means presents itself for me to avoid the shabbiness of leaving it unpaid.
Next Wednesday we leave (finally) our present lodgings, and go to Worthing for a fortnight. On our return our home will be at No. 8. Park Shot, Richmond, where we shall be all the happier some day if you will come and see us. I miss a friendly word from you, after there has been rather a long cessation of letters or notes, but I know you always think of me affectionately. Mr. Lewes has had a sad trouble within the last week -- the death of his brother 626 who died at sea, leaving at home a wife and two little children. The grief of his sister-in-law and mother 627 has been very painful to him to witness, for he is a little like you in that matter -- the suffering of others either bodily or mental is almost unendurable to him unless he can be of practical use. With love to Cara,
Ever yours affectionately
Marian.
Please give the enclosed to Sara.
