Dear Friend
Mr. Lewes tells me that he has written to you about your contemplated second letter to the Leader. 427
As to the other point, he has heard nothing of it from Thornton Hunt, but, on receiving my letter in which I said that your copy had not been sent to you as usual, he "blew them up at the Office," supposing it to be an irregularity. The functionaries there told him that you were on the Free list and had therefore shared the fate of your compeers. He thinks that Thornton Hunt's delay in answering your letter is probably owing to his wanting to consult Pigott 428 about the matter. He is "very delicate about the paper" -- that is, I suppose, he dislikes interfering in anything that can have a pecuniary bearing.
Herbert Spencer is just come in, and asks me to send his kind regards to you. I think you will be quite touched, as I was, to read the enclosed letter of Mr. Combe's. My love to Cara, and thanks to her and you for all your kindness and indulgence towards my bad habits.
