My dear Mr. Bray
I quite understand the impulse which made it necessary to you to write that little explanation. We must always allow for the unrevised condition of winged words, and I did so in your case.
I think all the king's horses and all the king's men would not draw Mr. Lewes to an expedition beyond the necessary search for a country house 765 which is occupying us just now. We have long been getting hardened in our arrogant habit of going to see nobody, and asking all our friends to take the trouble of coming to see us.
Your departure from town will probably happen before ours (at the end of May), so that there is no danger of my missing the happy promise of seeing Cara? The Sydenham house I trust will soon be let, and then you will both come within easy reach.
Thanks for the prospective gift of your book, 766 which will be one side of an exchange to be completed I hope next November. With best love to Cara
